As guerras romano-persas foram uma série de conflitos militares entre o Estado romano e os sucessivos impérios iranianos: a Pártia e a Sassânia. A Pérsia, como um grande desenvolvimento cultural e militar, tornou-se um inimigo de Roma e manteve-se como tal por vários séculos. Os romanos viram nos persas uma potência semelhante a si, e os grandes reis de Ctesifonte viam-os da mesma forma. Os persas já há muito tempo denominam seus soberanos como "grande rei", o que lhes atribui uma grandeza similar à de augusto no Império Romano.

Os persas já há muito tempo denominam seus soberanos como "grande rei", o que lhes atribui uma grandeza similar à de augusto no Império Romano. As hostilidades entre estas potências iniciaram-se em 92 a.C. e prolongaram-se por séculos até serem concluídas com as invasões árabes muçulmanas, que atingiram os impérios Sassânida e Bizantino com efeito devastados logo após o fim do último conflito entre eles. Embora a guerra entre os romanos e partas/sassânidas tenha durado sete séculos, a fronteira permaneceu aproximadamente estável. Um jogo de cabo de guerra se seguiu: cidades, fortificações e províncias foram continuamente saqueadas, capturadas, destruídas e trocadas. Nenhum dos lados tinha força logística ou mão de obra para manter longas campanhas longe de suas fronteiras e, portando, nem poderiam avançar muito longe sem arriscar esticá-las muito tenuemente. Ambos os lados fizeram conquistas além da fronteira, mas com o tempo o equilíbrio foi quase sempre restaurado. A linha do impasse deslocou-se no século II: originalmente percorrendo a norte do Eufrates, neste período foi deslocada para leste e mais tarde para nordeste através da Mesopotâmia para o norte do Tigre. Houve também várias mudanças substanciais mais a norte, na Armênia e Cáucaso. A despesa de recursos durante as guerras romano-persas provaram-se catastróficas para ambos os impérios. A prolongada e ascendente guerra dos séculos VI e VII deixou-os exaustos e vulneráveis à súbita emergência e expansão do Califado Ortodoxo, cujas forças invadiram ambos os impérios poucos anos após o fim da última guerra romano-persa. Beneficiados pela condição enfraquecida deles, os exércitos árabes muçulmanos rapidamente conquistaram o Império Sassânida e privaram o Império Bizantino de seus territórios no Levante, Cáucaso, Egito e Magrebe. Ao longo dos séculos seguintes, a maior parte do antigo território do Império Bizantino permaneceu sob domínio muçulmano.
